Campus Watch

UNM’s Campus Watch program is a new safety initiative inspired by the National Sheriffs’ Association’s National Neighborhood Watch program. The purpose of Campus Watch is to enhance safety and security across the UNM campus, with a special focus on enhancing communication and awareness. Sharing information is essential to heighten awareness, problem solve, and identify the most appropriate resources for addressing various situations.

UNM’s Campus Watch program capitalizes on FM’s Building Coordinator program, which helps to facilitate communications, support facility minor capital planning and renewal, and represent user needs within UNM facilities. The UNM Police Department (UNMPD), Facilities Management (FM), and the Division for Equity and Inclusion (DEI) have divided UNM’s Main Campus into geographic “zones” to group buildings and spaces across campus that share common qualities, users, needs, challenges, and goals. Building Coordinators play a pivotal role in the success of the Campus Watch program by connecting with the local community in their respective facilities and zones, gathering knowledge, and disseminating safety information. The Campus Watch program also provides an opportunity for employees who work varied hours within each zone, such as custodial staff and groundskeepers, to collaborate with UNMPD and Building Coordinators about observations they make outside of regular business hours.

Through Campus Watch, UNMPD and Building Coordinators within each zone exchange relevant information about suspicious activity, safety, and security. Equipped with enhanced insight into what is occurring within each area, UNMPD and other UNM departments can take proactive measures to eliminate potential hazards, deter crime, and keep the community informed.

Get Involved

The Campus Watch's primary goal is to share information, not to report crimes. Anyone experiencing an emergency, witnesses a crime, or observes suspicious activity (whether it be an individual’s behavior or a vehicle) in any area of campus should contact UNMPD by calling 505-277-2241.

Contact information for representatives each zone and ways to get involved will soon be available here on the UNM Campus Safety website. In the meantime, we encourage students and employees to connect with Building Coordinators in the areas of campus you visit most. For a list of Building Coordinators on campus, visit the FM Building Coordinator Program website. UNM students, employees, and community members can also reach out to the Campus Watch Coordinators for questions or more information. These Coordinators distribute an e-newsletter to Building Coordinators each semester and collaborate on resolving common issues across Campus Watch zones.
