Campus Preparedness

Know how to find out if the Campus is closed and what to do - (505) 277-SNOW

UNM Communications Systems - The primary ways that UNM can provide emergency updates to students, faculty and staff are via these methods:

  • LoboAlerts is the new, opt-out text messaging system that provides faculty, staff, registered students, affiliates of UNM, and UNMH employees with fast, convenient, real-time message alerts.  To learn more about this service and to verify your contact information visit:, http://loboalerts.unm.edu. Additionally, parents, community members and other non-UNM individuals who wish to receive LoboAlerts can follow the LoboAlerts Twitter, or the LoboAlerts Facebook, or sign up for the UNMCommunity site.
  • Warning Siren will sound to let people who are outdoors know that it is dangerous to be outdoors such as, during a severe lightening storm; exposure to environmental hazards or other eminent threat.  Listen to the Emergency Alert Siren here….

The Warning Siren System is tested at the beginning of each semester to help familiarize the campus community with the sounds.  Tests are broadly announced in advance through the UNM Webpage, email messages and local notices.  If you hear the siren and there has been no advance notification, assume it to be a real alert and take these two actions:

Step One:  Seek shelter in the nearest building

Step Two:  Seek additional information from:

Shelter In Place - In some instances, it is safer to shelter in place and wait for further instructions.  Shelter in place orders are usually given to protect people from moving into an area where they could encounter danger.  If you are instructed to Shelter in Place, then:

  • Lock or Secure the door
  • Move away and stay away from windows and glass.
  • If possible, check for TextMe or email alerts, or the UNM web page for updates and further instructions.
  • Do not call 911 or the UNM Police Department for information.  Call ONLYif you need immediate assistance or you are trapped.
  • Stay calm and Stay put, Emergency Personnel will find you
  • Don’t leave your room until instructed by a Police Officer or authority figure.

Additional Safety Precautions

  • Develop a phone call-tree for your department or residence hall.
  • Practice your evacuation plans with friends and coworkers until everyone knows them well.
  • Review and revise plans regularly to include new people and room changes.
  • Share emergency alert information received from the TextMe or email alert systems with those who may not have received it.
  • Update your emergency contact information through LoboWeb.
